Hormonal Harmony and Perimenopausal Symptoms

Navigating the waters of hormonal harmony and perimenopausal symptoms in your mid to late 40s is akin to embarking on an uncharted territory. As a woman who has navigated this terrain, I am fully aware of the struggles. It can often be a journey of misunderstanding and stigma.

The pervasive notion of women being "a bit crazy" or overly emotional during this phase is not just dismissive; it's damaging. This misunderstanding, whether from partners, family, friends, or co-workers can lead to shame and denial, compelling women to mask their symptoms and internalise the turmoil they're facing. It's not just a physical shift; it's a transformation that encompasses the mind, body, and soul that should be embraced rather than stigmatised.

Perimenopause, often overshadowed and trivialised, is akin to puberty in its significance. Yet, while we readily discuss the changes of adolescence, the challenges of perimenopause are often met with whispers or brushed under the carpet. It's a disservice to women everywhere.

What many don't realise is that perimenopause, the precursor to menopause, is an inevitable phase that every woman will encounter. It's not a brief episode but a prolonged journey lasting anywhere from 10 to 15 years. The notion of suffering in silence must be discarded, and it's crucial to recognise that there's a lack of awareness even within the medical community.

Surprisingly, most general practitioners receive a mere six hours of training on perimenopause, and a similar gap exists in nutritional knowledge. However, I don't point fingers at GPs. Having worked with healthcare professionals in my capacity, I've come to understand that assuming our local doctors possess comprehensive information on every aspect of health is unrealistic. In the realm of health and wellness, specialisation is the norm, and GPs are no exception.

It's necessary as individuals, to take ownership of our health and seek out the resources and support we need. In our modern society, where quick fixes and pharmaceutical solutions abound, the concept of holistic health often takes a back seat.

Western medicine undoubtedly has its place, particularly in treating acute illnesses and diseases. However, my passion lies in the holistic approach, an approach that prioritises on prevention rather than reaction.

Why do I share this background? Because everything is interconnected. Our lifestyle choices reverberate through our bodies, impacting our physical and mental well-being, including hormonal balance. It's not just about treating symptoms but fostering a comprehensive sense of well-being.

So, let's delve into actionable tips for women navigating perimenopause or experiencing hormonal struggles:

Empowerment through Knowledge:

Educate yourself about perimenopause. Contrary to popular belief, it can begin as early as 35 and often manifests symptoms in the 40s. As mentioned above, it can take up to 15 years from perimenopause to menopause - which is just 1 day, from then on a woman is postmenopausal.  As we take a step back we can see this equates to around one third of a woman's lifespan.  Awareness is the first step towards empowerment.

Holistic Approach:

Embrace holistic health practices that address the root causes of hormonal imbalances. Simple lifestyle adjustments, such as dietary changes and stress management techniques, and regular exercise that support the woman's body during this transition can yield profound results whilst avoiding more acute symptoms/disease in later life.

The Power of Sleep:

Prioritise quality sleep as a foundational pillar of health and hormonal balance. It's not merely a nightly ritual but a cornerstone to improving all areas of wellbeing. My personal journey saw significant improvements in sleep quality, which helped alleviate various symptoms such as excess stress, anxiety, mood swings and brain fog. As well as positively improving my energy, metabolism, mindset and everyday happiness!

Harmonising with Nature:

Aligning with nature and establishing effective daily routines is key to unlocking vitality and hormonal balance. From basking in morning sunlight to winding down with bedtime rituals, knowing the best time to eat for digestion and exercise for metabolism, when to wake up and when to switch off your devices can revolutionise your health, hormones and energy levels.

Decoding Ayurvedic Doshas:

Delve into the unique qualities of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. These elemental energies shape your being, both physically and mentally. They also govern times of the day, seasons as well as our season of life.

Empower yourself to make choices that align with your dominant dosha, as well as the season of life you are in.  For a woman going through midlife transition the energies of Vata become very dominant, armed with this knowledge and how to approach imbalances is going to empower you to make choices that support your health and well-being.

These practices aren't merely about symptom management; they're about reclaiming vitality and embracing the fullness of life. Sometimes, we forget how good we're meant to feel amidst the daily grind!
